Pronouns

Why I include pronouns in my email signature

I include my pronouns in my email signature (he/him) not because I think everyone needs to, but because it helps normalise something that can otherwise place an awkward burden on a small number of people.

Most of us rarely have to think about whether people will address us correctly. Some people do. Including pronouns is a small way of sharing that responsibility rather than leaving it entirely to them.

I want my colleagues and the young people and families I work with to know that their identity will be treated respectfully.

People will understandably have different perspectives on gender and pronouns. But courtesy and respect across differences really matter.
